How to improve wood stove efficiency and heat retention in a cold climate

Strong demandHow-to / TutorialExtracted from 15 comments

Heat retention is key. Perhaps curtain your windows including the door. Clearly wood storage nearer the house will be a top priority when the construction season starts.

Hi, you need to upgrade your wood stove to a blaze king with catalyst burner , burns for 12 hours don’t have to get up in the middle of the night

Build wood box inside the house for the firewood with table top

Practical tips for transporting firewood efficiently in snowy/icy conditions

ModerateHow-to / TutorialExtracted from 4 comments

Hey there . We burn wood in an indoor wood stove all winter. When I tote wood to the house I use a long skid like yours. I learned if I bungee milk crates and sometimes the roughneck tall Rubbermaid totes(I can fit 2 ) it allows me to bring in a lot more in one trip. Nothing falls off the skid or gets wet from snow. It is an amazing small improvement to move wood efficiently. 👋🏼 from central Michigan.

You definitely need a larger sled the big black ones We have 2 and they are invaluable during the winter months.

This spring and summer building a proper wood storage should be top on the list. Getting your wood off the ground so it can cure well is vital to not having to use so much. I saw some of it had snow on it. ❤ I hate cold weather in Tennessee I don't even want to consider it in Alaska 😂

Methods to prevent pipes from freezing in cold weather

Strong demandHow-to / TutorialExtracted from 3 comments

You could use heat tape on your pipes

get a diesel heater for under your cabin just for those times when the wind is threatening to freeze your pipes!

To prevent your pipes from freezing put in a small fan under the floor close to your wood stove with a grate flat on the floor covering the opening and let it run continuously. It will pull enough warmth to keep the crawl space from freezing. BTW, put a switch on it so you can turn it off when it isn't as cold.

Specific advice on managing wood supply for winter heating

ModerateHow-to / TutorialExtracted from 3 comments

Stock more wood, your going to need it at those temps

if you can get some pallets to lay down on the ground before stacking wood it will help it from freezing to ground

I would sell that wood stove and buy a large blaze king. I would also build a wood shed onto the cabin the size to hold a winters supply. That's how we live in Northeast Ohio and that stove never is out from November thru March. I'm prepping mine for next winter tomorrow and done. It was 74 here today. I guess I'm glad I'm stuck in Ohio.😊

Information on alternative heating methods like rocket mass heaters or coal stoves

ModerateComparisonExtracted from 3 comments

Coal is a lot less work and hotter. Last for 10 hours at a time.

Pretty sure I commented this already but you really should look into a rocket mass heater with a cob bench... The bench radiates heat into your home LOOONG after the fire goes out. May allow you to sleep through the night. Not hard to make on your own. Look them up on YouTube. I'd at least consider it in your future build.

I’ve been watching a lot of videos about the huge Russian ovens that keep the whole house warm and use a fraction of the wood. Have you guys thought about building something of brick that will hold the heat?

Very good ice storm coverage by your young newscaster there. lol

How my husband explained it to me: Watch means you have the makings for a taco. Warning means you have taco.

How to deal with ice accumulation on roads and for traction

ModerateHow-to / TutorialExtracted from 2 comments

Suggestion: spread your wood stove ash out on top of the ice and it will assist in melting, but more importantly give you some traction - try it.

Long-term plans and priorities for improving off-grid cabin livability

MinorOtherExtracted from 1 comments

I know you have been there less than a year,, but so far you have been playing 'whack a mole' with all the repairs to make the place liveable. I'm sure there is a growing list of ideas and things to be tackled ahead, to which unless you are living there, most people won't understand your priorities. I hope sometime before you are able to work outside again, that you both sit down and give us a general idea of what you want to accomplish this next season. Also answer some common questions that viewers keep asking. i think it would be really interesting to hear your plans and needs.
