I think Hubert was going to enter the hot seat next season and the new AD’s main focus was going to be finding his replacement. So his job was in jeopardy, but that loss to VCU just expedited everything.

Next stop for May is the NBA. There is no way a coach goes from the best in the big ten to a school in a 2 team conference. There is literally no competition outside of Tobacco Road.

in the era of NIL I don’t see Todd Golden and Dusty May and Tommy Lloyd leaving for UNC. yes you’ll get better recruits but unless they rebuttal the transfer portal rules you can throw cash at freshman who don’t get playing time.

When or whomever they hire. number one issue is recruiting on an elite level. Wilson was one elite over the past 4/5 yrs Duke had elite players the past 4/5 years. Zion Williamson Panchero Flagg and this Boozer Why can’t we get to that point

The problem is, even if you are one who thinks Hubert is getting a raw deal because Caleb got hurt and we wouldn’t be having this conversation otherwise, and the fact that it wasn’t Hubert out on the court making boneheaded mistakes, missing free throws & missing easy shots…the problem is that his reputation may be so damaged at this point that recruiting would be irreparably damaged if he remains as coach. We’ve already seen it in portal recruiting over the past few years, the number of guys we’ve missed on before we had to settle on what we ended up with. We couldn’t get Dalton Knecht for example, we also couldn’t get a number of guards we wanted before settling on Kyan. There have been so many things that slowly chipped away at Hubert’s reputation and by association…UNC’s reputation. Even though he wasn’t a huge recruit, Simeon Wilcher bolting before ever suiting up was a bad look. GG Jackson bolting before ever suiting up was a huge blow, Hubert had recruited the #1 player in the country and couldn’t keep him. Hubert proved he could still recruit by getting Ian, who was #3 at the time he committed, and getting Elliot…but Elliot bolting “immediately” after the season ended last year and Ian leaving even after a pretty good freshman season & saying he wanted a more experienced coach were damaging. Hubert again proves he can recruit by getting Caleb, but bad luck strikes again with the injuries and a terrible first round loss. You almost want to give him another chance, but is he too damaged?

The last Carolina player to make an NBA all-star game played at UNC 30 years ago. UNC’s last top 5 draft pick was 2 decades ago. The next coach has to get our recruiting back on track.

The guy on the right is Hubert's friend who is trying to clear a path for Hubert to walk away with dignity and money. But Carolina can't make a move without having a new coach to be named, because the longer it sits the worse it will look for the university; and then there are the recruits Hubert brought in for next year.

You were talking about Matt Doherty, who was hired by UNC from Notre Dame after Coach Roy Williams decided to say at Kansas. After coach Dean Smith retired UNC he actually handed the job to his longtime assistant coach Bill Guthridge. Guthridge was handed the best team in college basketball led by juniors Vince Carter and Antawn Jamison. Guthridge coached for I believe three years before deciding to retire and that’s when Roy Williams turned down the job because of his promise to Nick Collison and Raef LaFrentz that he would coach them for all four years. So UNC hired Doherty, who proved to be one hell of a recruiter upon signing the class of Raymond Felton, Rashad McCants, Sean May, which was the core that Roy coached to a national championship in 2005 after accepting the UNC job once Doherty was fired after two miserable seasons and Collison and LaFrentz were were heading to the NBA.

Giving faith to UNC admin. that they will be able to hire someone worthy is laughable. They all have their own agendas and won't be on the same page.

One of Hubert’s greatest mistakes was not keeping Roy close and using him as a mentor after he took the head coaching job. He should’ve had him in there, asking him questions, etc., and getting his advice.

There is a UNC video out there where Mitch says when you play for Dean Smith you don't think about losing. Dean was cool and calm his teams didn't get tight. The team sees Hubert get tight and they are an extension of that

I can remember when Dean would take the entire 5 guys on court and bench them. Then hed put them back in eventually.
