Speaking as a black man from the south, that was one of the best deep dives into this movie I have seen. You really nailed the complexity of our history and I've already shared this with 3 other friends. Great job.

You did miss a very “meta” point about the “Pick Poor Robin Clean” usage in the movie… the song was originally released in 1931 by black women, Geeshie Riley and Elvis Thomas, but like so many black artists, had the song appropriated and re-recorded by white singers for white audiences. Coogler used this as a way for Remmick to gain advantage in trying to enter the jook because it was likely the patrons at the party would’ve recognized and welcomed it. I love that he put both the original and Remmick’s versions on the soundtrack.

I'm so rooting for him on the Oscars. I would often forget that it was the same actor playing two different characters in Sinners.

I love all the subtle elements in Michael B. Jordan's performance. The hands shaking while portraying Smoke, the wider vowels when portraying Stack, or how Stack darts his eyes during uncomfortable moments while Smoke turns his head. It makes the dynamic as brothers very believable when watching in theaters!

She is so right! Smoke and Stack felt like two different characters! He's incredible.

Fun Fact: Jack O'Connell signed on after reading the script only once, after learning that his character would be performing his favourite genre of Irish folk music.

The song the Irish vampires 'introduce' themselves with, 'Picked Poor Robin Clean', is an old rhythm and blues song first recorded in 1927. There are different versions, but the fact it's a black song helps lean into the idea that the vampires are stealing other cultures. Polyphonic did a great video about whether Sinners is a musical, high recommend. As a child of identical twins, Michael B Jordan did a FANTASTIC job of making Smoke and Stack separate people. I honestly thought it was two different actors made to look similar at first. Miles Canton doing his own singing and guitar playing was brilliant, and.Ludwig Göransson once again crafted yet another magical soundtrack that respects and pays homage to the culture it's based in. That man is the new John Williams.

I never thought I would see the tin shacks where I know my great grandma and grandma grew up in (in a different state, but same idea) on screen. From that moment I was hooked. Went to see it in theaters twice. Jono, Joshua and Alan, thank you for doing this episode! I humbly request a Villian Therapy on Reddick, because there is some meat on the bones there about assimilation into culture. It would be lovely to discuss with Joshua again.

1 additional thing that stuck with me from the movie was the point that everything was a lie. Smoke & Stack trying to find a place in society where they could be successful and more importantly free. Remmick tells them it was all a lie. "no matter how much money or how many guns? They gon take it from you when they want" I think about black wall street or seneca village and how they were destroyed once they became too prosperous. That makes everything feel hopeless. Especially when you can look around and equate that metaphor to soo much of what goes on in our world today (even beyond just black folks and white folks). Its a system of blood suckers feeding on the public at large

Excellent analysis! The climax of the "money as a symbol of vampirism" trope was the scene with Cornbread asking for his money at the door, as a ruse to attempt to force Smoke outside and turn him into a vampire. It seemed like he was using Smoke's own sense of honor against him (Stack might've told Cornbread to screw off, but Smoke would feel out of integrity about not paying him for an honest day's work), which is a real phenomenon that highlights the vampiric nature of greed. It's like the inventor with pure intentions who sells his disease-curing product to a corporation, thinking that they will spread the cure far and wide, only for that vampiric corporate behemoth to shelve the product forever because they make more money by keeping the disease going.

It really seals in the curse of vampirism at the end when Remmick says "I hated those men, but the words still bring me comfort" because he can't hear his ancestors 🥺

These "double roles" were really popular in 1980s bollywood movies. It was a whole trend.

Fun fact: In the behind the scenes, it was mentioned in the costume department lead that most of the clothing seen were originally meant for the unproduced Blade film when it was originally set in the 1920s - 30s century.

I cry now every time I watch "I Lied to You." They're all so free in that moment... and then it pulls out to Remmick, staring on with pure avarice. Breaks my damn heart 💔.

When I first saw the musical number in Sinners I was literally on the edge of my seat. I never get so into a scene in a film where I physically moved to the edge. By the end I was moved to tears at just the sheer beauty of that scene.

The scene between Smoke and Annie is my favorite scene in the movie. That connection and heartbreak in their exchange and the pain and finally release between them hit me so hard.
