i've read the book way before and they absolutely kept the spirit of it. There were definitely alot more science in the book like WAY more that the movie left out but i understand it's what you gotta do to fit it in a feature length film

The movie was great, but the book is so much denser. The movie covers all the major story events, so it's not like the Martian where a decent portion of the book is just not there, but there is so much fascinating science, problem solving and worldbuilding that the movie glosses over. One thing I thought the movie was missing some of was the pin drop "oh shit" moments that you get in the book. I wouldn't necessarily call them twists, but they have that vibe, and while there are some in the movie they cut or recontextualize them to make them less impactful. In short, there is much more of the bromance, biology, and engineering, and the story is on the whole more "edge of your seat" than the movie is. Obviously the movie benefits from its fabulous visuals and soundtrack but if the more sciencey or cultural aspects of the movie appeal to you you should definitely check out the book

The book explains why Rocky's crew died more. Rocky's home planet has a very thick and strong atmosphere so the Eridians never had to deal with radiation and had no knowledge of it. So when they built their ship, they did not build it to resist radiation during their journey to Tau Ceti. The reason Rocky survived was because their ship was powered by astrophage and astrophage adapted to survive on the surface of the sun and therefore it is a natural protector from radiation. Since Rocky was the engineer on his ship he spent most of his time near the engines where all the astrophage (radiation resistance) was. The Eridians also didnt know about relativity and thats why they had so much extra fuel by the time they met Grace. They thought they would need a lot more fuel to reach Tau Ceti because they didnt know that traveling that fast they would experience less time and thus require less fuel. This is why Rocky was able to lend Grace extra fuel, offering a way back to earth. Also Erid space technology was not very sophisticated and Rocky said his people hadn't developed much technology in terms of space travel but they were still able to build a decent ship because they have an elevator on their planet that goes right to space that they built. Remember their "sight" is actually just hearing (sonar), so they cant see the stars in the sky or any other light sources without instrumentation.

When a Rock can make you cry u know its good shit

Rocky screaming and crying before making the choice to save Grace was heartbreaking. The older lady sitting next to me was beside herself, just sobbing. I don’t think she’d read the book, because she was acting like Rocky was gone, poor lady. She legit whispered “praise God” when Rocky was ok.

there is also a big thng.. rocky.. chooses to make grace happy.. he will help grace go back to earth.. with his fuel.. while he will be in space for another 6-7 years.. the fact.. rocky wants grace to be happy.. but on earth.. they told him he has nothing there.. no family, nothing.. hes " expendable".. it really says alot.. why would he go back? and he picks rocky.. * cries.. he gives humanity hope.. but he chooses a fellow scientist.. WHO.. made first contact.. it wasn't grace, itwas rocky that made first contact trying to communicate with grace.. it shows how insanely smart he was. the whole learning to communicate part was soo good.

Only thing science wise is I wish they slowed down slightly towards the beginning when he was figuring out the astrophage. He was losing his shit. And explaining Rocky’s mind and how he translates.

Astrophage didn't kill Rocky's crew. Astrophage blocks radiation from space, so the hail mary uses a layer of astrophage around the hull to keep the crew safe. The Eridians didn't know about radiation, so only rocky survived because he lived close the astrophage on his ship

The book and audiobook are absolute masterpieces. I strongly advise EVERYONE to experience Ray Porter's narration, I've listened to it at least 20 times. It's so beautifully detailed that I'm still picking up new bits of information that I missed on my previous listen. I have never in my life been so excited for a movie.

Well, that’s just what it is. It’s a friendship story. In both the book and the movie, the end of the “save the world” plot is kind of anti climactic. You’re supposed to be more emotionally invested in Grace saving Rocky than you were with him saving Earth, and the reason for that is that saving Rocky is the hardest thing he does in the story. The story starts with him in space, and when he realizes he’s there to save Earth, of course he’s going to try to do it. He doesn’t have anything to lose by trying to save Earth, because even after Rocky offers him the fuel, if Earth dies, then so does he. However, we know from what happened on Earth that given the choice, he’s afraid to make real sacrifices, so when he turns around to get Rocky (and in the book, he does this believing he’s going to run out of food and die because he saved Rocky) it’s the hardest thing he’s ever done, and that’s a big part of why we care about it more. Also, Rocky is the most likable character in the story, and it’s easier to care about one likable person than it is to care about a whole planet of people you don’t know. That’s why it works, for what it is. But if you want a story that’s about saving the world first, then this won’t be your favorite movie, and that’s okay.

The only reason for grace to travel to earth would be as part of a diplomatic mission in my opinion.

Zaffy, the astrophage tanks protected Rocky from interstellar radiation. His species knew nothing of radiation, so the ship was not built to block it. Rocky's survival was a happy accident.

Something I found amazing about this film was that the aliens weren’t more or less advanced than humans but had advanced differently, so Rocky felt like a very useful character but wasn’t the solution to every problem.

The book explains why Rocky's crew died more. Rocky's home planet has a very thick and strong atmosphere so the Eridians never had to deal with radiation and had no knowledge of it. So when they built their ship, they did not build it to resist radiation during their journey to Tau Ceti. Regarding the death of Rocky’s crew, it was not the astrophage radiation, but simply space radiation. Ryan’s character even mentions at one point that Rocky’s species has no knowledge of radiation, and his ship was not built to resist it. I found that interesting in the film—they created a species that is very advanced in some areas, but with limited knowledge in others. About the movie, I enjoyed a lot. It's good to see an optimistic story sometimes.

Analysis of the film's themes, such as friendship, optimism, and heroism.

"This movie is about the power of friendship" - DON'T LEAVE, DON'T LEAVE. LOL

It prioritizes friendship a couple of notches over the space theme. I actually understand you. To me, that rare and needed friendship aspect to our society compensated for that small deviation from the scifi potential.

Make optimism and heroism great again.

Ryan Gosling’s performance was inspired by Charlie’s in Hunger Games

Watched this yesterday and I love the movie! Best movie that I have watched! A well-rounded movie, heartfelt, and the movie like did not leave me hanging, coz it shows that the knowledge he got reached earth and Eva was able to see alien Rocky, so its not just Dr Grace's imagination and that Dr Grace survived and Rocky took care of him and Dr Grace is living his wonderful life in Rocky's planet. Just WONDERFUL!

Project: Hail Mary gives me similar vibes to the first time I saw Joker, in the sense that I am absolutely dying to know more about what happens after the credits roll, but also dread the idea of a sequel because I feel like it could ruin what’s already a nearly perfect story. Maybe just a slight epilogue, a montage that shows the next few centuries of Human/Eridian history, want to see if we’re ever able to make official contact and begin interacting/cooperating on a large scale.

Sorry Karsten, I already decided that this is a 9/10 movie
